The Five Percent Nation — formally the Nation of Gods and Earths (NGE) — was founded in Harlem in 1964 by Clarence 13X (born Clarence Edward Smith), a former student minister at Nation of Islam Temple No. 7, the same temple where Malcolm X once taught. Clarence broke from the NOI over its teaching that Wallace Fard Muhammad was God in person; he began teaching instead that the Black man himself embodies the Original God, and that a "Five Percent" of the population holds and teaches this knowledge to the wider community — hence the name.
The NGE does not consider itself a religion, and it has no single central headquarters — it exists as a living oral tradition passed through "ciphers" (circles of study and recitation) and 120 numbered lessons. Its vocabulary has also spread widely through hip-hop, especially from groups closely tied to the culture like Wu-Tang Clan, Brand Nubian, and Rakim.
This is one specific tradition's system of meaning, not a universal or scientific one, and people inside and outside the Nation read parts of it differently. The definitions here reflect commonly taught versions of the Supreme Mathematics and Supreme Alphabet.
